Sand Point Park: Your Starting Line for Fun and History

Start your exciting adventure at the expansive Sand Point Park. This popular 29.88-acre community river park is nestled right at the juncture of U.S. 1 and the Max Brewer Causeway, making it a convenient launch point with plenty of parking.

  • A Touch of History: This sandy promontory was the original nucleus of the settlement of Titusville! Before it was a park, it served as a vital trading center. Be sure to look for the Astronaut Memorial Plaza near the south side (across the street), a dedicated tribute to the crews of Apollo, Challenger, and Columbia.
  • Park Amenities for All Ages: Sand Point Park is a true destination! For our walking seniors, the park features a fantastic 0.66-mile exercise trail that meanders through open and shaded areas. For the grandkids, the large playground and the amazing free splash pad are huge hits.
  • Essential Facilities: You’ll find clean, convenient restrooms, numerous picnic tables and pavilions for a pre-walk stretch or post-walk rest, and a paved bicycle pedway.
  • Cyclist-Friendly Stop: If you or a companion choose to cycle, the park is equipped with a great bicycle repair station. It includes a convenient air pump, a variety of tools, and bars to hold your bike up while performing simple fixes—a thoughtful feature for any walker or rider!

A. Max Brewer Bridge: The Scenic Ascent to Fitness

From Sand Point Park, it’s time for the star of the show: the majestic A. Max Brewer Bridge. Walking this bridge is an excellent way for seniors to get a great cardio workout, complete with a satisfying hill climb that will gently challenge your muscles.

  • A Dedicated Path: The modern bridge, completed in 2011, was designed with pedestrians in mind! It features a dedicated, wide walkway that keeps you safely separated from vehicular traffic, allowing you to focus on your steps and the views.
  • Bridge Details: This 3,207-foot-long (about 1 mile from Sand Point parking lot to Parrish Point Parking Lot) girder bridge spans the beautiful Indian River Lagoon, replacing an older swing-span bridge. It’s named in honor of Albert “Max” Brewer, a prominent Titusville attorney.
  • Unbeatable Views: As you climb the bridge, you’ll reach Titusville’s tallest point, offering truly breathtaking panoramic views of the Indian River Lagoon. Keep your eyes peeled! This is one of the best places to spot dolphins playing in the water below and, on launch days, to get a crystal-clear, free view of rocket launches from Cape Canaveral.

A round-trip walk over the bridge and back can be about 2 miles, offering a perfect, moderate-length workout!

Parrish Park: Your Island Oasis and Turnaround Point

Once you cross the main span of the bridge, you’ll arrive at Parrish Park (technically, Parrish Park at Titusville), an urban district river park that makes for an excellent turnaround point and spot to relax before your walk back.

  • Park History & Purpose: This park is strategically located on the Max Brewer Causeway, extending toward the security gates for Kennedy Space Center. It’s known for providing convenient access to the Indian River for fishing, water sports, and, notably, its stellar rocket launch viewing. It also serves as a trailhead for the Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail.
  • Island Amenities: I have been here a few times already and on different days of the week (no weekends) and while there is a building that houses bathrooms, they have been locked on each of my visits. There are porta-potties but I would suggest using the restrooms at Sand Point park. There are plenty of covered picnic shelters to take a break and rehydrate. For the anglers, there’s a fishing pier and great shoreline fishing. The park also boasts a large 6-lane motorized boat ramp, making it a hub for boaters and water enthusiasts.
  • Geocache: If you look hard enough, you just may find a Geocache!

Final Thoughts!

This Sand Point to Parrish Park walk is more than just exercise; it’s a social outing, a nature tour, and a mini-history lesson all in one! You can get your steps in, enjoy the refreshing breeze, and cap it off with one of the most famous sunsets on the Space Coast. So lace up those walking shoes, grab a water bottle, and start enjoying the beautiful, active lifestyle Titusville has to offer!

I would suggest some kind of head cover while walking over the bridge. lastly don’t forget your camera as there are some incredible views to be photographed along the way!
