A few years back we were camping at the KOA in Amarillo. As we rode around looking for cool roads to ride, we saw a sign on the side of the road that said “Historic Monument” 1 mile. Okay, we’re game. We took the left at the next sign and found ourselves heading for the Alibates Flint Quarry National Monument.

Changed Names
Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument was originally known as Alibates Flint Quarries and Texas Panhandle Pueblo Culture National Monument when it was originally authorized on August 31, 1965. The name was shortened to its current name on November 10, 1978.
In the early years, the flint was used for spear points for hunting. The Quarry is made up of multiple small pits.
Gift Shop & Museum
After riding some twisty roads, we arrived at the Alibates visitor center and monument. Inside the visitor center is a small gift shop and museum. Towards the back of the building, there was a small room with seating. It was there you could watch a short video that gave the history of the Alibates Quarry.
There are ranger-guided Quarry tours, Flintknapping demonstrations, and a short nature walk. There are clean restrooms located on-site. The Rangers were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. You need to call ahead for the ranger tours.
Don’t Forget Your Stamp
If you have a National Parks passport book, there is a cancellation stamp center in the visitor center. We collected our first 2 stamps there ( The second stamp was for Lake Meredith which we had visited the day before.)
If you are into National Parks and enjoy history, you will enjoy this park. The best part is admission fees are $0
Final Thoughts
This park was a hidden gem. Packed with a ton of history and no entry fee this makes a great way to spend the day. Pack a lunch, tour the museum, and sign up for a Ranger-guided tour. We had limited time here but should we ever find ourselves in the area we will definitely head back and do the tour.
