Box Cañon In Mountains

Discover the Majestic Box Canyon Falls

While staying at the KOA in Ouray, CO, I found Box Cañon Falls while exploring this beautiful area.

Nestled in the breathtaking San Juan Mountains near Ouray, Colorado, Box Canyon Falls Park offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike. This unique geological wonder, combined with the park’s amenities and rich history, makes it a perfect destination for seniors, families, and anyone seeking natural beauty.

A Glimpse into History

Box Canyon’s story begins as a mining camp, playing a vital role in establishing Ouray as a permanent community. The canyon itself was formed by Canyon Creek, which eroded a narrow gorge through limestone weakened by a geological fault over millions of years. This powerful force of nature created the stunning 285-foot waterfall that is the park’s centerpiece. The park was designated an important bird-watching area by the National Audubon Society in 2001, highlighting its ecological significance.

Explore the Park’s Amenities

Box Canyon Falls Park provides various amenities to enhance your visit:

  • Visitor Center: Learn about the falls, local wildlife, plant life, and the area’s history through interpretive exhibits and photographs. Note that the visitor center is closed during winter, but the trails remain open year-round.
  • Hiking Trails: Choose from three trails catering to different fitness levels:
    • Falls Trail: An easy 500-foot walk with a metal walkway leading to the base of the falls, where you can feel the mist and the power of the water.
    • High Bridge Trail: A short but steep climb to a bridge above the falls, offering stunning views. This trail also connects to the Ouray Perimeter Trail. I had to stop a few times on this one and take a break, but it’s well worth it.
    • Native Plant Loop: An easy stroll near the visitor center, showcasing the local flora.
  • Picnic Areas: Enjoy a relaxing meal at the picnic tables, some of which are sheltered and equipped with grills.
  • Restrooms: Available for your convenience.

Events at Box Canyon

While specific events at Box Canyon Falls Park might vary, the area offers various activities throughout the year. For example, the Box Canyon Trail Races take place in Telluride, offering 30K and 10-mile options. It’s best to check local event listings for the most up-to-date information.

Planning Your Visit: Costs and Accessibility

There is an admission fee to enter Box Canyon Falls Park. Pricing can vary (see note at the bottom of this post). The park strives to be accessible, with the lower trail being easily accessible via a walkway. The high bridge trail is not handicapped accessible. The City of Ouray Community and Conference Center, associated with the park, offers ADA accessibility.

Dining Options

While there are no dining options directly within Box Canyon Falls Park, the town of Ouray offers a variety of restaurants.

There are picnic tables, some sheltered, in the park. If you wanted to (I do most times on day trips and park visits), you can bring your own food. Some of the gazebos have grills if you want to spend the day enjoying the beauty of the forest.

A Great Place for Kids and Grandkids

Box Canyon Falls Park is generally a great place to bring children. The easy Falls Trail is suitable for all ages, and the chance to see chipmunks and hummingbirds adds to the appeal. However, be mindful of safety on the steeper High Bridge Trail.

Tips for a Memorable Visit

  • Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for the Black Swift, a unique bird species that nests in the canyon walls.
  • Be Prepared: Bring a jacket as it can be cooler and misty near the falls.
  • Photography: Capture the stunning scenery and wildlife, including the “smiling” chipmunks.

Final Thoughts

Box Canyon Falls Park is more than just a waterfall; it’s a natural wonder with a rich history, diverse wildlife, and trails for all abilities. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, this park promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Colorado Rockies.

This park is a definite must-see if you are visiting Ouray.
