KOA Point South / I-95 Yemassee Holiday: A Senior-Friendly Home Base for Lowcountry Exploration

Finding a comfortable, safe, and well-situated place to stay is essential for senior travelers, especially when you plan to use your campground or motel as a reliable “home base” to explore a broader region.

During my recent travels through the beautiful South Carolina Lowcountry, I chose to stay at the KOA Point South / I-95 Yemassee Holiday in one of their basic cabins. This convenient stop, located right off the interstate, offers a delightful blend of charm, comfort, and unique amenities that make it an enjoyable and relaxing stay for seniors who appreciate both convenience and a touch of adventure.

Whether you’re traveling in an RV, looking for a simple tent spot, or hoping for a fun, unique overnight experience (hello, charming caboose cabin!), here is a complete, senior-focused review of this campground, including accessibility, cleanliness, amenities, atmosphere, nearby attractions, and overall value.

Location and Check-in: Convenience is Key

KOA Point South / I-95 Yemassee sits perfectly right off Exit 33 on Interstate 95, making it an ideal overnight stop or a comfortable multi-day home base for exploring the surrounding Lowcountry.

  • Interstate Ease: For seniors who prefer not to navigate long or complicated side roads, this immediate proximity to the interstate is a significant plus, minimizing travel stress.
  • Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite the highway proximity, the campground maintains a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere thanks to the surrounding wooded areas, a dedicated nature walk, and a small lake.
  • Staff Experience: Check-in was easy and efficient. The staff members were notably friendly, upbeat, and welcoming during my visit—a definite positive for travelers who appreciate patience and personal attention.

Pricing & Value

KOA rates vary by season and accommodation type, but this campground is moderately priced compared to many other options along the I-95 corridor.

While not the cheapest option, the included amenities and prime location help justify the cost, especially for seniors who prioritize a high standard of comfort, cleanliness, and convenience over saving a few dollars. RV sites, cabins, and the novelty caboose cabin all fall within typical KOA Holiday pricing. My wife and I prefer a campground setting opposed to hotels.

Amenities & Standout Features

This KOA offers a fantastic range of amenities designed to appeal to seniors, casual travelers, and families alike.

Spotless Facilities (with a Caveat)

Cleanliness is always a top priority, and I was pleased to find the bathrooms and main facilities to be very clean during my stay.

  • The Good News: They offer a combined handicap-accessible stall/shower, which is a crucial feature for travelers with mobility needs.
  • The Caveat: The shower and restroom areas are on the smaller side, featuring only a couple of stalls and showers. There is only one bathhouse. Seniors who prefer more space or less activity should plan their showers for off-peak times.
Unique Lodging: The Caboose Cabins

One truly charming feature of this KOA is its railroad caboose cabin rentals. These creatively converted train cars offer a fun, nostalgic, and totally unique lodging option for anyone looking for an experience beyond the standard cabin.

Accessible Recreation

The campground provides several low-impact activities perfect for seniors:

  • A seasonal swimming pool
  • Various outdoor games and recreation areas
  • A fully enclosed K-9 dog park for guests traveling with their pets
  • A nature walk around the lake, perfect for a relaxing stroll or for stretching your legs after a long drive.
The Community Hub: Grill, Coffee & Wine

One of the most unique and convenient aspects of this KOA is that the main office building is also a community hub, serving as:

  • A grill (serving breakfast, pizza, wings, and more)
  • A coffee house
  • A wine bar

This on-site dining and relaxation spot is a major convenience. If you don’t feel like cooking dinner or just want an easy cup of coffee in the morning, you have excellent options right there on the property.

RV Sites & Logistics

RV travelers will find a variety of pull-through and back-in sites. The campground also offers a very convenient propane filling station, which is a huge time-saver for long-distance travelers.

Handicap Accessibility Overview

KOA Point South / I-95 Yemassee offers fair overall accessibility for seniors with mobility concerns.

  • Positives: The park has a relatively flat layout, and as mentioned, includes a handicap-accessible bathroom/shower combination.
  • Caution: Some surfaces, particularly on minor pathways, are gravel or slightly uneven, so those using walkers, canes, or scooters should navigate these areas with a bit of caution.

Internet Availability

Wi-Fi is available throughout the park, and during my stay, speeds were sufficient for basic tasks like browsing and email. As is common with many campgrounds, the speed may slow down significantly during peak usage hours. Seniors who rely heavily on a strong, consistent internet connection (e.g., for video calls or streaming) may want to consider bringing a personal backup hotspot.

Nearby Senior-Friendly Attractions

The Yemassee/Lowcountry region serves up a surprising number of attractions all within a comfortable 30–45 minute drive, making this KOA an excellent base for day trips.

History & Sightseeing
  • Beaufort Historic District: Enjoy browsing bookstores, relaxed dining, and viewing the beautiful antebellum architecture.
  • Old Sheldon Church Ruins: A peaceful, open-air, and highly photogenic historic landmark.
  • Port Royal Boardwalk & Observation Tower: Scenic, easy to walk, and very senior-friendly.
Nature & Parks
  • ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge: Excellent for accessible birding and nature photography; one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast.
  • Colleton State Park: Great for easy riverside walks and picnics.
  • Lake Warren State Park: Known for fishing, wildlife watching, and easy walking trails.
Relaxed Tours
  • Beaufort Trolley Tours: Perfect for seniors who prefer to sit while sightseeing and learning about the history.
  • Carriage Tours of Beaufort: A relaxing, horse-drawn experience rich with local history.
  • Lowcountry Boat Tours: A great opportunity to relax on the water and spot local wildlife like dolphins and marsh birds.

Final Verdict

The KOA Point South / I-95 Yemassee Holiday is a safe, comfortable, and feature-rich campground that works wonderfully as a home base for seniors exploring the historic Lowcountry region of South Carolina.
