New Jersey Roadside Oddities

Green Sargent Covered Bridge in New Jersey

One of my absolute favorite things to do when I am out riding around is to find roadside oddities and attractions. I have been known to make many a U-turn while driving down the road. This page will be dedicated to any roadside attractions that I have found in the state of New Jersey.

It will be a constant work in progress as I will add new oddities and attractions every time I find one. Make sure you check back often for new updates. Better yet, subscribe to my site so you will be informed each time content is added. Don’t worry, no spam here. I only send out emails once a week, usually on Fridays. Subscribe Here.

Located just outside of Stockton, the Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge holds the distinguished title of being the last remaining historic covered bridge in the state of New Jersey. Originally built in 1872 to carry travelers over the Wickecheoke Creek, this picturesque structure is a classic example of the wooden queen post truss design. While it was nearly replaced by a modern concrete bridge in the 1960s, a dedicated local “Save the Bridge” campaign successfully preserved the landmark, leading to its careful dismantling and reconstruction using the original timbers. Today, the bridge remains a functional, single-lane crossing that serves as a rustic gateway to the rolling hills of Hunterdon County, standing as a weathered and beautiful survivor of a bygone era of American transportation.

A true New Jersey institution since 1944, Hot Dog Johnny’s is more than just a place to grab a bite; it is a quintessential roadside attraction that has remained virtually unchanged for decades. Located right along Route 46, its iconic yellow-and-blue sign and massive rooftop hot dog make it an unmistakable landmark for anyone traveling through Warren County.

Nostalgic Branding: From the old-fashioned ordering windows to the classic logo that adorns everything from the napkins to the rooftop, the site feels like a living time capsule of mid-century Americana.

Retro Roadside Charm: The stand maintains an authentic vintage atmosphere, featuring outdoor picnic tables and a riverside setting that encourages travelers to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Signature Menu Items: While the deep-fried hot dogs are the main draw, the stand is equally famous for its cold buttermilk and birch beer, traditionally served in heavy, frosted glass mugs.

Family-Friendly Layout: Unique for a hot dog stand, the property includes a classic swing set and grassy area alongside the Pequest River, making it a popular “stretch-your-legs” stop for families.
