Brief History
The history of this site is as compelling as its serene atmosphere. In the 1920s, a group of French-Canadian Catholics, known as “snowbirds,” traveled to Florida to escape harsh winters. Led by Napoleon Pelletier, they established a rural shrine on the shores of the lake, building it with stone, a rare material for a Florida structure. The shrine, initially known as “Ste Anne des Lacs,” or “St. Anne of the Lakes,” grew over time to include a small white chapel, an elaborate set of statuaries depicting the Stations of the Cross, and a replica of the Lourdes Grotto.
Skyrocket To Fame
The shrine’s fame skyrocketed after a French artist, Francis Marsollier, brought his terminally ill son to the lake. The boy’s health improved, and his miraculous recovery was attributed to the “healing waters” of the lake. In gratitude, Marsollier dedicated his talent to beautifying the shrine, adding murals and sculptures. For years, thousands of pilgrims would flock to the site for annual events, but the pilgrimages eventually ceased with the outbreak of World War II. The original church was unfortunately torn down in the 1960s to prevent vandalism, and many of the statues were relocated to the nearby Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
What Remains Today? The Structures and the Sanctuary
While the original chapel is gone, the remains of the shrine create a powerful and meditative space. The grounds are often cared for by local neighbors and the Knights of Columbus, who have also added a permanent altar where an annual Easter sunrise Mass is held.

Yes! The shrine is an excellent destination for seniors. The grounds are relatively flat and the paths are easy to navigate, making it a pleasant stroll. While some of the paths are a bit uneven and consist of packed dirt and gravel, they are not long or strenuous. The site is a perfect place for a gentle walk, quiet contemplation, and taking in the unique history.
Private Neighborhood
One thing to keep in mind during your visit is that this is located in the middle of a quiet neighborhood. Please be respectful of where you park, walk, and the noise you make. I parked off on the side of the road and as I was taking pictures I saw a resident who was out working on his yard. He came over and introduced himself and started telling my wife and I all about the history behind the monuments. It was awesome!
