Anyone who is a CPA or does taxes can appreciate the busyness and craziness of tax season. After the last season was over I told my wife I needed a weekend getaway. We love to just randomly go somewhere for a weekend just to get out of the RV and soak up different scenery. Oak Hammock Resort fits the bill.
Cabins On The Lake
This time was more of an “I need to unwind” from the hustle and bustle of last-minute filers…lol After searching the internet for someplace that was not a far drive away and preferably had cabins on a lake, we found a place right in our own backyard.
Are They Really Cabins?
Well not exactly in our backyard but in the next town over. Close enough for me. It did not have cabins on the water but had cabins (not really cabins) on the grounds within a short walk to Lake Pierce. That was good enough for me. We were able to reserve a cabin (more like an efficiency apartment) For the upcoming weekend.
Road Trip
That weekend we loaded up the little midget (our name for the Ford Escape) and headed out on our super long 20-mile road trip…lol. It took us longer to load the car than to drive there.
The Office Was Locked
When we arrived the office was closed (not sure why, it was the middle of the day) but there was a sign on the door that had a phone number to call. We called the number and one of the owners (the wife) was up there in a couple of minutes. She told us to follow her. It was only a short (very short) distance to our cabin. She opened the door and walked in with us.
As we checked out the place the one thing we noticed right away was it looked retro and was super clean. It had a living room, kitchen, 2 bedrooms, and a full bathroom. After she left we unloaded the car and of course, had to check out the rest of the campground.
Catch & Release
The campground had an RV section, a catch-and-release pond, a game room with a pool and poker table, a Clubhouse (available for rent), a laundry room, a K-9 park, and of course Lake Pierce. The grassy area behind the office is where the dock and lake are.
You could either fish off the pier or dock your boat. I believe they also rent their pontoon boat. The grassy area leading to the pier and dock had Adirondack chairs placed throughout so you could sit and relax looking at the lake. If there was one disappointment to this place I would say it was the conditions of those chairs. They were very dirty. I don’t think it would have taken much effort to clean them off each day but that’s my opinion.
Sunrise & Baby Gators
Saturday morning we decided to get up early and watch the sunrise. We arrived a little early but at least we had our coffee. It was extremely buggy on the dock. Should have brought bug spray…lol. We almost decided the bugs (they were like tiny annoying gnats) were too much and we were going to head back to the cabin when I spotted movement in the water.
It was a baby alligator. How cool was that?!!! We started watching this guy and he was cracking us up. So much that we forgot about those annoying gnats. He (or she) was trying to catch these small fish but they were too fast for him. He would turn his head one way to grab them and they would swim away and he would snap his head around the other way to try again. He had us entertained for quite a while. Never did get a fish…lol Poor guy.
Relaxing
Not long after that, the sun started to rise. We were treated to a beautiful sunrise as it came over the trees and lake. I am so glad we did not go back to the cabin early. We did some relaxing, walking around, and more relaxing the rest of the day. This was just what I needed.
Sunday morning it was cloudy and threatening rain so we did not go down to the docks. Instead, we decided to sleep in. After cooking breakfast and having our coffee, we packed up and left. Again, there was no one in the office so we called the number again. She told us to leave the key in the cabin and off we went.
If I was ever looking to get away for the weekend again, I would not hesitate to come back. Who knows. Tax season is coming up again. I may need this after the upcoming season!!!…lol
