Red Roof Inn Ellenton-Bradenton: A Senior Traveler’s Honest Take

Because “home base” beats “resort” when there are beaches to explore and adventures to be had.

📍 Ellenton, FL 🗓 May 19–23, 2025 💰 $80.10/night 👴 Senior-Tested

NOTE: I know this review is a little late to the party (I temporarily lost… misplaced the photos) and some things like the continental breakfast might have been restarted, but the overall review still fits this location.

Home Base, Not a Resort in the Bahamas

Let’s get one thing straight from the start: if you’re looking for a poolside umbrella drink service, a spa with hot stone massages, and a concierge who knows the best table at a five-star restaurant, this review is not for you. But if you’re like me and you use a hotel room the same way a bird uses a nest (sleep, recharge, fly out for adventure, repeat), then pull up a chair.

The Red Roof Inn Ellenton-Bradenton sits smack in the middle of a very busy stretch of road just off I-75. It’s within easy striking distance of the Gulf Coast beaches, the Ellenton Premium Outlets, IMG Academy, Bradenton, and Sarasota. For five nights in May 2025, it was my launching pad for everything the area had to offer, and it did that job admirably.

Step One: Lower Your Expectations. Step Two: Be Pleasantly Surprised.

First Impressions

The exterior is exactly what you’d expect from a Red Roof Inn, no marble fountains, no topiary swans. But there is a helpful covered overhang at the entrance that lets you pop in to check in without getting scorched by the Florida sun. In May. When it was pushing 90-something degrees. Small mercies.

Walking into the lobby, however, I was greeted by the unmistakable cheerfulness of… caution tape. Yellow caution tape stretched around the food and coffee area like a minor crime scene investigation was underway. The “Business Hub” computer wore a proud “Out of Order” sign. I half-expected a detective to walk in asking if anyone had seen the continental breakfast.

Clean, Old, and Full of Surprises, Mostly Good Ones

The Room

I booked a Deluxe 2 Full Beds Non-Smoking room for my wife and I, and upon entering, the cleanliness genuinely impressed me. Was it brand new? No. Was it so clean you could eat off the floor? Well, I wouldn’t go that far. Old bones, well-kept, the hotel equivalent of a classic car that still runs beautifully.

The beds were firm and comfortable. The AC unit, a standard motel wall unit with digital controls, absolutely crushed it in near-record Florida heat. The room also had a separate dehumidifier, which in Florida humidity is basically the difference between sleeping and sleeping inside a warm sponge. Gold star for that.

Lighting was plentiful, outlets were abundant (a gift to those of us traveling with approximately nine devices and two CPAP machines), and there was a table with two chairs, a surprisingly civilized touch that made morning coffee (I bring my own mini Keurig) and evening debrief sessions feel almost dignified.

“The TV remote only worked with the top buttons,” the clerk warned me at check-in. Fair enough. But nobody warned me the TV would spontaneously turn ON and OFF on its own, twice during a hockey game. Poltergeist? Gremlins? A rogue smart-TV update? We may never know. The hockey team in question also lost, so perhaps the TV was trying to spare us.”

The Bathroom: Where This Hotel Actually Earns Its Senior Stripes

Accessibility & Bathrooms

Here’s where budget motel skeptics, take note: the bathroom was genuinely thoughtful for older guests.

The tub height was low, making getting in and out less of the Olympic hurdle event it sometimes is. The toilet was higher than standard, a subtle but genuinely appreciated upgrade for knees and hips that have logged some serious mileage. And there was a grab bar at the shower entry. Water pressure was good, hot water was plentiful, and the overall space was clean and easy to navigate.

Now, the website does advertise ADA-compliant handicap rooms, which is worth noting when booking. As for the broader property: it’s a two-floor exterior-corridor motel with no elevator. If stairs are a concern for you or your travel companion, make absolutely sure you request a ground-floor room when booking. Don’t assume, confirm.

Location: Fantastic. Noise Level: Hello, Truckers.

Location & Noise

The location is genuinely excellent for explorers. You’ve got a Waffle House next door (a travel institution unto itself), a bar within walking distance, and practically everything else, beaches, shopping, restaurants, medical facilities, within a short drive. The Bradenton/Sarasota area is loaded with things to do, and the Red Roof’s position near I-75 makes it easy to zip around in any direction.

Here’s the thing nobody puts in the brochure: there’s a truck stop nearby. And truck stops, bless their hearts, operate 24 hours a day with the kind of ambient roar that reminds you diesel engines are not known for their gentle purring. If you sleep lightly, you will know every single 18-wheeler that passes between midnight and 6 AM.

My solution: a box fan (I also have a white noise machine) I travel with. White noise at its finest, $30 from any hardware store, and my best travel companion in noisy accommodations everywhere. Problem solved.

The Pool Is There. Bring Your Own Shade.

There is a pool. A small pool, but a pool nonetheless, and in Florida in May, a small pool is still very much a pool worth using. The one hitch: zero umbrellas. Not a single lick of shade around that pool deck. In Florida. In May. We’re not sure what the architects were thinking, but we’re reasonably certain none of them were seniors who grew up being told “wear sunscreen and get out of direct sunlight.”

My advice: bring those clip-on beach chair umbrellas. Your dermatologist will thank you.

Beyond the pool: there’s a laundry room with one washer and one dryer, each running $4 per load. For a multi-night stay, that’s either convenient or highway robbery depending on your perspective. There’s no fitness center and no concierge.

The hotel is pet-friendly, which is worth noting for those who travel with four-legged companions.

A Word on Rewards: Manage Those Expectations

For Redi Rewards Members

I’m a Redi Rewards members, and as such, we expected our complimentary bottled waters, a standard perk of the program. When I asked, I was told this location doesn’t participate in that particular benefit. Two complimentary waters may seem minor in the grand scheme of travel, but when you’ve earned a perk and it’s not honored, it’s a little deflating.

That said, the senior discount combined with the Redi Rewards rate did bring our nightly cost to a very reasonable $80.10, so the program is still delivering value even without the waters. Just be aware going in so you’re not caught off guard.
